AI Traceability

“Safely Scaling” Human-AI Collaboration w/ Atlassian…

Justin Townsend

Context is Key 😀

AI Traceability in Atlassian’s Eco-System @ 22nd April 2026

  • “Rovo” is the “umbrella” term for all of Atlassian’s AI (user) features, including:
    • Rovo Chat
    • Studio (for Rovo)
    • Rovo Chrome extension
    • Rovo Dev (Chat)
    • Rovo Dev (CLI)
    • Rovo Dev (for Jira)
    • newly, Remix w/ Rovo AND…
  • likely more to come!
    • New genAI tool combinations often increase LLM usage, through new model introduction and further token consumption.

Thank You…

  • Jira Cloud: Spaces (Project) Board

git commit -m ‘FT-12 #time 4h 30m #comment UI Updated.’

  • hashtags might give it away…
    • #time…,
    • #comment…
  • Jira Smart Commits: (Extended) Git CLI

BUT, DO YOU Know Jira’s Face like this…?

  • Modern, integrated Atlassian at YOUR point of interaction.

WHAT… is the point of all this?

✨ Weightless Work with Rovo?

  • We’re switching on the (embedded) AI
    • Let’s avoid the strategic roadmap becoming our competitor’s backlog
  • Mitigate those unintended consequences…

Rovo Control & Insights (TOGAF View)
Control Evidence Intervene
Admin ✅ Rovo access ✅ Rovo Insights
Audit - ✅ ALQL = ‘activity ~“Rovo”’ -
Insights - ✅ Analytics
Studio ✅ Rovo Agent Permissions
Forge - ✅ Developer Console ✅ / ❌
Extension (*.vsix) ✅ Rovo Dev Settings ✅ Logs ✅ / ❌

Rovo (Dev) -> Tell Me MORE?

  • Where THE WORK starts
    • What are ALL those Rovos doing?

Rovo Dev (Sonnet 4.5) -> Forge App, GraphQL API

Forge App -> Missing Scope
Figure 1: Rovo Analysis with a Forge App?
  • ❌ OK, another approach?

AI Traceability -> Forge App Architecture
  • So where next?
    • EVEN more Rovo Dev features are available
      • Sessions, Logging etc.
    • I have renewed “hope”…
  • Vibe-out more features for my Forge App
    • Can I load some Rovo Dev session logs to prove a point? 1

Rovo (Dev) -> More to Give?

Rovo Dev -> Limit Exceeded

Rovo Dev -> Limit Exceeded
  • After 8.5 days of the month, I bust through the orgnisation’s token pool 2
    • NO MORE for anyone else it seems
    • Back to the budget-holder cap-in-hand?
  • BUT is this MY fault?
    • NO separate limits for development and testing, as yet…?

Rovo (Dev) -> “Sense Making”

  • No sub-agents this time, BUT
  • +220 LLM calls, +200 tool calls later…

Rovo -> Where Does That Leave US?

  • Control and guidance ✅ (Settings, AGENTS.md, MCP Configuration)
  • Reports and tracing ✅ (Insights, Session Logs) 3 BUT
  • Runtime intervention ❌, needs change / customisation
  • In the meantime?
    • DPA caution
    • “Sandbox” my Rovo prompts before deployment?
      • Monitor emergent behaviour in logs
    • Re-cycle the sandbox for new prompts
      • Periodically deliver new “prompts” designed to guide agent behaviour…

🔮 Rovo (Dev) -> Near Future…?

  • Leading agent engineering platforms provide a hint?
acli rovodev run /hooks

acli rovodev run /hooks before_agent
acli rovodev run /hooks after_agent
acli rovodev run /hooks before_model
acli rovodev run /hooks after_model

acli rovodev run /hooks wrap_model_call
acli rovodev run /hooks wrap_tool_call

🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤷🏻‍♂️ ?

Why Listen to Me…?

Footnotes

  1. Solution shown is sub-optimal at-scale, consider a dedicated SRE tool.

  2. Some AI solutions make token consumption a 1st class citizen.
